San Antonio

I don’t know about Y’all, but when I hear San Antonio I instantly think Riverwalk and The Alamo!  They just seem to go together.  I loved getting to go there a few times (pre-Covid) and can not wait to go back again.

Since I have a friend heading there soon that asked about a few ideas of things to do I thought “why not share my list with everyone!”  I’ve included links to each location for more information such as what they are about, the hours, and address.

I will say that the bottom portion of this is the places that I want to explore during future trips (have not been to them yet).  But, hopefully, some you get to visit before me and let me know how they are, and if it’s something I "need to see".

Let me start with the obvious, The Alamo.  It’s just a must-see when you are there.  So much history! Listen to the speakers inside because they have such great information to share, and will even point out all the original bullet holes in the walls.  Since my family likes a good laugh my daughter thought it would be funny to ask if we could see the basement (insert PeeWee Herman moment).  I can not imagine how many times they get asked that!  But they were great sports and gave her so much more information, and she loved it!

After this, you can stop by the San Fernando Cathedral (https://sfcathedral.org/) which is the oldest standing church in all of Texas!!  It is beautiful.  I would also suggest checking out Historic Market Square (https://www.marketsquaresa.com/) while in the area.  There are a ton of restaurants and shops to buy some souvenirs.

You will find many spots to access the Riverwalk.  It was different than I pictured but still so great to see.  The walking paths were pretty small and there were many times I pictured one of my kids falling (or jumping) into the river!  My son has been known to love water.  Anyways, I loved the famous colored umbrellas and was so glad we got to eat dinner right there under one of them while we watched the boats passing by!  Very cool experience.  And take a boat tour!  If you get lucky and get a great/funny tour guide it will be one of your best experiences!  We laughed and learned so much that ride.  It was incredible.  We actually even went back for a night ride, but that guide was more business, but we still loved seeing the riverwalk all lit up!

If you are vacationing with your children I can’t highly recommend enough the DoSeum!  My kids did not want to leave.  We spent so much more time than I had anticipated there because of how much fun they had.  They even sometimes host adult nights that look like so much fun, I wish we lived closer!  Here is their site, check it out y’all!  https://www.thedoseum.org/

Another place that we all absolutely loved was the Japanese Tea Garden.  It was beyond words beautiful and such a hidden little gem. My pictures can’t do it justice, so you just need to go and see for yourself.  Trust me, it’s worth the visit, and admission is free!

Now here is a list that I have put together of additional places that I want to at some point see in San Antonio.  Some of them are well-known places, some might be a little less known.

Tower of the Americas - 750 Foot Tall Tower - because of the view!

Post Oak Creek - Fossil/Shark Teeth Hunt

Did y'all know that in Sherman Texas (about 30 minutes north of McKinney) there is a great spot to search for old shark teeth and fossils?  There were fossils everywhere.  Just pick a spot to sit and start scooping up rocks and you are bound to find something interesting!  Supposedly the old shark teeth are from 145 million years ago. (Some of our finds) We went with friends, because what better way is there to spend a gorgeous day outside (easily able to social distance), but still so much fun!  I mainly took pictures...because hey, it was just beautiful.  And because I love taking pictures of people having fun.  But everyone else was sifting rocks and enjoying hanging out in the water of the creek looking for shark teeth and cool fossils and rocks.  I couldn't believe how many they found!!  If you find something different here is a good link to see what it is:    http://northtexasfossils.com/sharks.htm Who knew that you could do someth...

Frisco Central Park

Yes, y'all read that right... Central Park .  Being from New York the name of this park caught my attention the first time I drove past it.  And then a second later I saw all the Longhorn Statues on the front lawn and it went from "I wonder what type of park this is" to "I need to walk around this park!"  I am glad I did...I think you might like it too!  Obviously, that is why I am telling y'all about it!   The first thing I need to tell you is that the park is nowhere near as big as the NYC Central Park.  It is actually very small (or as my kids would say, "perfect size").  But there is a lot of beauty in this very small place.  Some people even call it a "hidden gem in Frisco".  I would agree with that!            Location: 3155 Parkwood Blvd, Frisco TX 75034.  It is right off of Parkwood.  You might not even see it at first because it is surrounded by hotels...but you probably won't miss the big Long...

Prairie Creek Park

Did y'all know that right here in North Texas there is a hidden waterfall?  It is tucked inside a wooded greenbelt park that has trails, bridges, and creeks....and it is located right in Richardson Texas.  Prairie Creek Park! The history of this park is that it was founded in 1966 and is one of the oldest and most historical parks in Richardson.  This area has been preserved to protect nature and wildlife habitats.  Beautiful park, and has a waterfall?!!  Y’all need to go see this place!  And I should mention that the waterfall is so easy to access.  It is very close to the street where you can park.  And it is pretty easy to find because before you can even see it you will hear it.  The sound of strong rushing water seems to echo through the trees.  And you can even walk over the top of the fall to get onto the trail! You can go and just see the waterfall but I highly recommend going for the walk through the trails.  It is so peace...
