Deep Ellum -Murals

Y'all need to do a day trip to Deep Ellum!  It is located right outside of Downtown Dallas.  This area is sometimes called Dallas' original walking neighborhood for art.  That is a very accurate description. No matter where you walk there is something beautiful or creative to see.  It almost feels like every inch of this area has been thought about and every wall is an open canvas.

Deep Ellum has been a must-see destination since 1873.  In the 1920's it was the place to be for Jazz and Blues music or a night out on the town.  In 2009 the Deep Murals Project was started with the goal of transforming some of the deteriorating, blank walls into pieces of art that reflected Dallas and Deep Ellum's history and culture.

In 2012 the 42 Murals Project was started as an opportunity for artists (local and international) to showcase their talent through murals painted on the historic buildings in Deep Ellum.  Not all of the murals are part of this project, as their are way more than 42.  The majority of them are on Main Street and Elm Street (they run parallel so it is very easy to walk up and down and see everything).  There are plenty of parking lots or you might even find a parking space along the street.  You can also find a few others on Commerce Street, so it is worth it to drive around a little bit.

One of my favorites is the "I Love You" mural.  It is located at 2913 Elm Street.  It is one of the most popular in the area.  My family was here last year and it was faded, so it was nice to see it repainted.  If you get lucky there will not be any cars parked in front of it so that you can get a great picture of you and your loved ones!  (It’s a very popular proposal location as well).

Directly across from this mural you will find “Boom!” This mural is incredible with its vibrant colors.  It will absolutely catch your eye!

“Deep Elm” is a mural that showcases the past of Dallas to the future.  It is located at 2631 Main Street. And is one of the original 42 Murals Project.  Lots of great history in this one.

“Deep Ellumphants” makes a great backdrop and is located at 3601 Main Street.

Even if you have been to Deep Ellum before, there is a very good chance that there will be something new to see.  The artwork is changed often.  There is always something being added or changed.   This is an example of artwork added due to Covid-19.

If you are lucky enough you might get to be there when a new masterpiece is getting added!  I have always loved murals, and I am fascinated by how these artists are able to take a plain boring wall and effortlessly transform it.  What starts out just looking like lines or something that doesn't make sense that turns into something amazing.  I can't wait to see what this wall ends up looking like when it is done.  If any of you end up going there I would love to see a picture of this finished project!

And just when you think you have seen one of the biggest murals you all of a sudden come to the 15-story-tall trellis of vines and flowers on a Deep Ellum luxury apartment tower.

Not only is their pretty artwork, but there are also so many places you can grab a bite to eat.  Burgers, Tex-Mex, BBQ, Cafe's, etc.  Lots of outdoor options as well.

There are so many great murals to see but, here are just a few more of my favorites!  These pictures don’t do the area justice....y’all need to go see this for yourself!

I ❤️ Dallas and Deep Ellum is really such a great part of it!

Post Oak Creek - Fossil/Shark Teeth Hunt

Did y'all know that in Sherman Texas (about 30 minutes north of McKinney) there is a great spot to search for old shark teeth and fossils?  There were fossils everywhere.  Just pick a spot to sit and start scooping up rocks and you are bound to find something interesting!  Supposedly the old shark teeth are from 145 million years ago. (Some of our finds) We went with friends, because what better way is there to spend a gorgeous day outside (easily able to social distance), but still so much fun!  I mainly took pictures...because hey, it was just beautiful.  And because I love taking pictures of people having fun.  But everyone else was sifting rocks and enjoying hanging out in the water of the creek looking for shark teeth and cool fossils and rocks.  I couldn't believe how many they found!!  If you find something different here is a good link to see what it is:    http://northtexasfossils.com/sharks.htm Who knew that you could do someth...

Frisco Central Park

Yes, y'all read that right... Central Park .  Being from New York the name of this park caught my attention the first time I drove past it.  And then a second later I saw all the Longhorn Statues on the front lawn and it went from "I wonder what type of park this is" to "I need to walk around this park!"  I am glad I did...I think you might like it too!  Obviously, that is why I am telling y'all about it!   The first thing I need to tell you is that the park is nowhere near as big as the NYC Central Park.  It is actually very small (or as my kids would say, "perfect size").  But there is a lot of beauty in this very small place.  Some people even call it a "hidden gem in Frisco".  I would agree with that!            Location: 3155 Parkwood Blvd, Frisco TX 75034.  It is right off of Parkwood.  You might not even see it at first because it is surrounded by hotels...but you probably won't miss the big Long...

Prairie Creek Park

Did y'all know that right here in North Texas there is a hidden waterfall?  It is tucked inside a wooded greenbelt park that has trails, bridges, and creeks....and it is located right in Richardson Texas.  Prairie Creek Park! The history of this park is that it was founded in 1966 and is one of the oldest and most historical parks in Richardson.  This area has been preserved to protect nature and wildlife habitats.  Beautiful park, and has a waterfall?!!  Y’all need to go see this place!  And I should mention that the waterfall is so easy to access.  It is very close to the street where you can park.  And it is pretty easy to find because before you can even see it you will hear it.  The sound of strong rushing water seems to echo through the trees.  And you can even walk over the top of the fall to get onto the trail! You can go and just see the waterfall but I highly recommend going for the walk through the trails.  It is so peace...
