Looking for something different to do? Did you decide to not take your summer vacation, but you still want to see some new places that are not too far away. Well if you are in the North Dallas area, Y'all Need To See Denton Texas!
Let me explain why! I am the type of person that likes to see everything. I like to look at new buildings, see what little shops are around, find those pretty little places that you didn't know existed until you saw it. Well, last year I was told that the Courthouse On The Square in Denton is one of the most beautiful and most photographed Courthouses in Texas, and while I haven't been to many of them, I would have to believe that this statement could very well be true. It is Beautiful...and yeap, I took a lot of pictures of my family there! It was built in 1896 with Texas limestone and is so big and impressive to look at. The architecture is incredible! And it is not just pretty, but there is even a museum on the first floor and tours that can be taken (check online for hours). Anyways, if you are looking for a nice backdrop for some family pictures, this is a great place.
Oh, and speaking of photos....Denton is known for having beautiful murals all around the town. Some of them are huge works of art right on the walls of buildings and easy to find, but some are smaller and harder to find. It's a fun game in my family of who can find the works of art as we walk or drive around the town. My kids like to see who can find the most. But if you are the type of person that needs to know where they all are you can easily google Denton Murals and find addresses for them all. I must admit that I did this after looking for them (because as I said above...I am the type of person that needs to see everything...so I didn't want to miss any!) But what fun would that be if you started off knowing where they all were. I will let you know that this flag mural attached can be found at 1100 N. Locust Street (Faded Blue Vintage Furniture & Home Decor store). With July 4th coming up this could make a great Instagram photo opp.
Back to downtown talk. Surrounding the beautiful, incredible Courthouse are a bunch of shops, restaurants, coffee shops, and even a Discover Denton Welcome Center (that is temporarily closed). We were sad that it was not open because the first time we when to visit Denton it was one of our favorite shops. Lots of cool little finds, and a great place to get some ideas of things to do in the area, lists of events, and local music venues. Did I mention that Denton is known for its music events! Any given day there will be some type of music happening in Denton. The Art and Jazz Festival with over 3,000 musicians and seven stages in April (it is one of the largest tourist attractions in North Texas), the Denton Redbud Festival with music from local bands, the Blues Festival the third weekend of September, and so many more events. And this does not include the local artists that sit on the lawn playing beautiful music at any given moment. Last year my family happened to go to Denton on "Make Music Day Denton". It is an annual event on June 21st (that happens to be today!!) It is a one-day event with free live music performances, stands set up for kids to make instruments out of objects, and even areas set up to try instruments. Due to Covid, some events will not be going on as scheduled and will be done virtually on Facebook Live but there might still be some live performances in the center of the square by local artists throughout the afternoon.
I can't end this without mentioning that if you do go to Downtown Denton that you really need to check out the Old Fashioned Ice Cream Shop! Beth Marie's! In my opinion, it is a must-go-to location when in Downtown Denton. The original owners wanted to create an authentic historic ice cream & soda fountain parlor within the Historic Courthouse Square, and they did it. The second you walk in you feel like you have stepped back in time. They are known for having over 130 different flavors of ice cream with a menu that changes seasonally. At any given time there are between 40-65 flavors to choose from. You know that feeling when you expect a place to be cool, but then you walk in and realize that you really had no idea exactly how cool it would be. Well, that was this place for my family. And then we walked over to the ice cream selection...speechless. Everything looked so amazing that you really got the feeling that no choice would be the wrong choice! The biggest problem would be that you can't get it all. As for how it was, let's just say that before my kids were even done with their ice cream they were already asking when we would be coming back! If you like ice cream I highly recommend stopping here! (If that wasn't already obvious).
Maybe another time I will go into even more things to do in the area, but for now, I will end this with, if you haven't been to Denton Texas yet.....Y'all Need To See This.
