Plano - Deerfield Lights

One of our favorite family holiday traditions is to drive around looking at Christmas lights. Original I know!  Well, this tradition started when my husband and I were 16 and just dating.  We would get some hot chocolate, donuts, be in PJs, and have the Christmas music on as we drove around.  Honestly we loved competing to see who found the best Griswold-like house and who found the one that was decorated in the most unusual way.  I always won (I was not driving in all fairness). But I still won!

Well, now we have kids and we have not missed a year. They won’t let us.  Maybe it’s because of the hot chocolate and promise of donuts, but that’s ok.  So moving to Texas we needed to find all the lights!  And we were instantly told where we needed to see and the neighborhood of Deerfield was a clear, “Y'all need to see it!” (so of course we had to).  And it did not disappoint.  It was really busy and we did not expect that many cars in a neighborhood at the same time as us.  But those houses!  Incredible!  If you haven’t seen it, I really recommend it.  Walking or driving around it is great.  The neighborhood light season goes from December 1-30th from 7 pm-10pm on weekdays, and 7 pm-11pm on weekends.  But some houses do turn on their lights early when it starts getting dark, and you can avoid some of the later crowds.
  • Deerfield is in Plano between Preston Rd. and Coit Rd.  There are a lot of side streets that get you into the neighborhood, just follow the cars!
While I was looking for the times of the holiday lights I found this story online and wanted to share it.  I love learning all about the area and how things came to be.

“The Story of Deerfield’s Tradition of Holiday Lighting- When Deerfield was being built, it was considered by many to be too far north on Preston Road. There were only fields north of the intersection of Park and Preston. The builders wanted to get people into the neighborhood to look at the homes, so for three or four Christmas seasons, they offered the homeowners a $5000 prize for 1st place, $2500 for second place, and $1000 for 3rd place.  Also, there weren’t nearly as many families then as there are now so it was not unreasonable to win a prize. Several people got very competitive about it. People/pets were dressed in costumes and greeting people who drove through even giving out candy. Some people covered their lawns in cotton. Animation was very big. I remember one house had their teenage daughter get dressed in an angel costume and would stand in the front window and act like an animated figure. You had to look closely to realize it was a real person. The next year, everyone owned so many lights, they put them back up and the tradition began. *Story from a longtime Deerfield homeowner.”

Y’all need to see it!

Post Oak Creek - Fossil/Shark Teeth Hunt

Did y'all know that in Sherman Texas (about 30 minutes north of McKinney) there is a great spot to search for old shark teeth and fossils?  There were fossils everywhere.  Just pick a spot to sit and start scooping up rocks and you are bound to find something interesting!  Supposedly the old shark teeth are from 145 million years ago. (Some of our finds) We went with friends, because what better way is there to spend a gorgeous day outside (easily able to social distance), but still so much fun!  I mainly took pictures...because hey, it was just beautiful.  And because I love taking pictures of people having fun.  But everyone else was sifting rocks and enjoying hanging out in the water of the creek looking for shark teeth and cool fossils and rocks.  I couldn't believe how many they found!!  If you find something different here is a good link to see what it is:    http://northtexasfossils.com/sharks.htm Who knew that you could do someth...

Frisco Central Park

Yes, y'all read that right... Central Park .  Being from New York the name of this park caught my attention the first time I drove past it.  And then a second later I saw all the Longhorn Statues on the front lawn and it went from "I wonder what type of park this is" to "I need to walk around this park!"  I am glad I did...I think you might like it too!  Obviously, that is why I am telling y'all about it!   The first thing I need to tell you is that the park is nowhere near as big as the NYC Central Park.  It is actually very small (or as my kids would say, "perfect size").  But there is a lot of beauty in this very small place.  Some people even call it a "hidden gem in Frisco".  I would agree with that!            Location: 3155 Parkwood Blvd, Frisco TX 75034.  It is right off of Parkwood.  You might not even see it at first because it is surrounded by hotels...but you probably won't miss the big Long...

Prairie Creek Park

Did y'all know that right here in North Texas there is a hidden waterfall?  It is tucked inside a wooded greenbelt park that has trails, bridges, and creeks....and it is located right in Richardson Texas.  Prairie Creek Park! The history of this park is that it was founded in 1966 and is one of the oldest and most historical parks in Richardson.  This area has been preserved to protect nature and wildlife habitats.  Beautiful park, and has a waterfall?!!  Y’all need to go see this place!  And I should mention that the waterfall is so easy to access.  It is very close to the street where you can park.  And it is pretty easy to find because before you can even see it you will hear it.  The sound of strong rushing water seems to echo through the trees.  And you can even walk over the top of the fall to get onto the trail! You can go and just see the waterfall but I highly recommend going for the walk through the trails.  It is so peace...
